The 15th and 16th November 2024
As the colder weather sets in, the all-weather racing season is in full swing, and I’m thrilled to share an action-packed weekend of rides. It’s a busy schedule, with Friday at Wolverhampton and Saturday all the way up in Newcastle, promising some competitive races.
Friday
First up, I’ll be at Wolverhampton for two rides. In the 6:00, I’m riding Eazy On The Eye for Heather Main. Last time out, she pulled off an absolute shock, winning at a stunning 66/1. It was no fluke in my view—she ran convincingly—so here’s hoping she can deliver a repeat performance.
My second ride of the evening is Majorelle Blue for Simon Pearce in the 7:30. Simon hasn’t had her long, so we’re still learning what makes her tick. She ran mostly over shorter distances last year, so this step up in trip is intriguing. Her recent run at Chelmsford was likely needed to shake off any cobwebs, and I’m hopeful she’ll benefit from that.
Saturday
On Saturday, it’s a longer journey up to Newcastle for four exciting rides, including two of the standout races on the card.
In the Churchill Stakes (3:15), I’ll be aboard Tyrrhenian Sea for Roger Varian. He’s had a lengthy break since the Winter Derby, giving him time to rest and come back refreshed. It’s a tough field for this time of year, with Dubai Honour—a horse of real class—posing a significant challenge. That said, Tyrrhenian Sea is in great shape, and we’re going in with confidence. No matter the outcome, he’ll come on for the run.
Next, at 3:48, I ride Azure Angel, another for Roger Varian. She’s a filly I know well, though this listed race presents her toughest test yet, with competitors like Annaf, who has been running consistently at over 100 in the ratings and even took a win in Saudi Arabia earlier this year. We may be the lowest-rated horse in the race, but she’s in fine form, and in horse racing, anything can happen.
Later in the evening, I’ll be on Vault Of Heaven for Kevin Frost in the 5:18. This is my first time riding this horse, but his last outing at Newcastle showed promise. It’s his handicap debut, so we’ll be learning a lot about his potential, especially over the six-furlong trip.
Finally, I round off the day with Red Maids for Mark Rimell in the 6:48. Mark isn’t often a regular up at Newcastle, so he must feel this is the right race for Red Maids to justify the journey north.
It’s shaping up to be a busy but thrilling weekend with plenty of potential on both cards. Each race holds its own challenges and opportunities, and I’m looking forward to seeing how each of these horses performs.
Jack Mitchell.
The 8th and 9th November 2024
After another fantastic week of rides up and down the country, I’m looking forward to the weekend and hoping to keep the momentum going.
Friday
On Friday, I have just one ride, which takes me up to Newcastle. I’ll be riding Sovereign Sea for Roger Varian in the 5:45. This will be his debut, and it’s taken him a little while to reach the track, but he’s a promising horse. It’s a small field, so I’m hopeful he’ll gain valuable experience and build on this run in the future.
Saturday
Saturday is an action-packed day with five rides lined up at Chelmsford.
My first ride is in the 4:30 with Akrramm for Roger Varian in the famous colours of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. This two-year-old already has a strong run under his belt from Sandown, where he performed impressively in a competitive novice race. He’s well-drawn for this race, though it’s a big field, and this will be his first time on the all-weather surface—something we’ll keep in mind.
Next, at 6:00, I’ll be riding Splitzbergen for Simon & Ed Crisford. He’s another two-year-old making his debut, and he’s shown good speed at home, which is why we’re starting him over six furlongs. We’re hoping for a positive first outing from him.
At 6:30, I’ll be on Specified for Marco Botti. Marco’s horses have been running well, and this one has some good form, including a strong second-place finish earlier in the year. He’s also drawn well, so we’re optimistic about a good performance here.
In the 7:30, I’ll be riding Blazes Boylan for Robert Cowell. I know this horse well—he’s got plenty of speed and has already proven himself on this course, winning his novice here and finishing a solid second next time out. Course form is always an advantage on these tight all-weather tracks, and with Robert’s horses hitting form, we’re hoping for another strong run.
Finally, in the 8:00, I’ll ride Dashing Panther for William Stone. William’s horses tend to do well at this time of year, and Dashing Panther has performed strongly in handicaps at big meetings on turf. If he can transfer that form to the all-weather, he’ll have a great chance of ending the day on a high note.
That wraps up my blog for the week. Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend—good luck to those with runners, and thanks for reading.
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 1st and 2nd November 2024
Looking forward to a great weekend of racing! We’re on home turf at Newmarket for both days, which is always a plus.
Friday
First up, I’m on Great Dream for Simon & Ed Crisford in the 12:35. He’s a nice young horse who’ll learn a lot from this first run. Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is a tricky track with its lumps, bumps, and gusty winds, so it’s bound to be a real learning experience. I’m hoping he runs well and gains valuable experience, as he’ll definitely be one to keep an eye on for the future.
Next, I’m on Spherical for Roger Varian in the 1:43 Listed race. She impressed me last time out at Kempton, fending off a strong challenger with a penalty, showing real grit. This listed race is a different league, but I feel she has a chance to show her quality.
My last ride on Friday is Phone Tag in the 3:27 for Kevin Frost. Previously trained by Hugo Palmer, I actually rode him on his first start ages ago. He’s got first-time cheekpieces, so Kevin’s obviously looking for a bit more focus from him. Hopefully, this change will give him the boost he needs to get to the finish line in first place.
Saturday
Saturday starts early with Glamorous Marlene in the 12:00, again for Roger Varian. She’s had two starts already, and I’m hoping her experience will help her handle the ups and downs of the Rowley. She put in a solid performance last time at Newcastle, so here’s hoping she builds on that.
Next is Blast the Dream at 12:32, another Varian horse. She’s a first-timer, so it’s hard to know what to expect just yet. These Newmarket novice races are always tough, but I’d like to see her put in a good run and set a foundation to build on.
In the 1:07, I ride Harry’s Halo for Kevin Frost. We got a win together last time at Redcar, where he finished strong, coming up late to take it. He’s a tough one, and ideally, I’d want a bit more rain for him—he’s a horse who loves the mud, so fingers crossed for a softer track.
Then there’s Protest for Roger Varian in the 2:50. She was a good winner with me first time out at Chelmsford. I really like how she ran that race. Moving to turf from an all-weather track is a new challenge, and it’s an incredibly competitive field for two-year-old fillies. It would be fantastic if she could win, but if not, I’m confident she’s one to watch for the future.
We finish up the day with Tanmawwy in the 4:00 for Heather Main. Heather’s horses are in great form, and I won on this one at Epsom. He’s a bit of a character, to say the least, but he’s had a nice break between runs, he enjoys this kind of ground, and he’s a fan of big fields. I really like his chances on Saturday.
That wraps up my two busy days at Newmarket. Hoping for some winners!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 25th and 26th of October 2024
This weekend is a bit quieter than usual, with just four rides spread across two days—starting at Wolverhampton on Friday and then down to Chelmsford on Saturday.
Friday - Wolverhampton
I kick things off with Eazy On The Eye in the 5:40 for Heather Main. This is a two-year-old I haven’t ridden before, and to be honest, he might not be ready to be competitive just yet. He’ll likely improve with experience and, once he gets his handicap mark and learns his job, could be one to watch in the future.
Next up, I’m back on English Spirit for Heather in the 8:15. He’s got a solid record at Wolverhampton, although his form has been a bit inconsistent. That said, he’s now at a winning mark and has been drawn well, so I’d say he’s my best chance of a win on Friday night. He’s won here before, so fingers crossed we can repeat that.
Saturday - Chelmsford
Moving on to Saturday, I’m aboard Storm Free in the 4:55 for James Tate. He put in a very strong performance last time, finishing second and leaving his debut run well behind in a competitive novice race at Kempton. He clearly handles the all-weather surface well, and while it’s another competitive race, I’m hoping he can take another step forward.
Finally, I ride Palazzo Persico for Ed Dunlop in the 7:00. He’s a horse I’ve won on before, and he needs a good pace to run at, which Chelmsford usually provides. He’s been running well in defeat lately, and with Ed’s horses in good form all season, I’m hopeful we can end the weekend on a high.
That wraps up a quieter weekend of racing for me, but I’m looking forward to giving it my all on track. Best of luck to everyone involved.
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 18th and 19th of October 2024
Looking ahead to another thrilling weekend of racing, I'm excited to be heading up to Redcar on Friday before heading down to Ascot for Champions Day on Saturday.
Friday – Redcar
My first ride is in the 1:52 on Harry's Halo for Kevin Frost. He's already a winner this season and has been running consistently well in defeat. The ground will be ideal for him, and I believe the trip will suit him perfectly. If there's a solid pace to chase, I think he'll have a strong chance of being right in the mix.
Next, in the 3:02, I'll be partnering One More Chrome for B F Brookhouse. This Irish horse has had just one start, finishing sixth out of eleven at Leicester. He looked a bit green on that debut, but I’m optimistic he’ll come on for the run. The ground shouldn't pose any issues, but we’re drawn out wide in stall 14, which isn’t ideal given the tendency for the field to head to the far rail this season. Nonetheless, with some improvement from his first run, I’m hopeful he can make a step forward.
I finish the day in the 4:45 with Times Edition for Roger Varian. She was unlucky not to hold on to her win last time at Pontefract, having been first past the post. I’m heading to Redcar feeling confident that she’s in with a live chance, though there’s one other horse on a similar mark that could be a challenge. With a bit of luck, she can make the most of her experience and deliver a strong performance.
Saturday – Ascot (Champions Day)
On Saturday, I have just the one ride, but it’s a big one! I’ll be in the Balmoral Handicap (4:35) on Daysofourlives for Marco Botti. He’s coming off a great win last time, beating a horse who went on to score impressively in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket, as well as finishing second in a Group 3 there. So, the form has really held up. It's a highly competitive race, and I’m hoping the rain stays away, as that would suit us better. Marco and the team are really pleased with how he’s been at home, so with a bit of luck on our side, I think he can put in a very nice run.
That rounds up my weekend – fingers crossed for some great results!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 11th of October 2024
After a successful week on the track, I’m looking forward to a busy Friday at Kempton with nine rides on the card.
Friday
We kick things off with Classy Hopes in the 4:03 for John Butler. She was a good second last time over course and distance, and with a favourable draw this time, I’m hopeful of a strong run.
Next up is Spherical in the 4:38 for Roger Varian. She’s a lovely filly who won on her debut earlier this year and wasn’t disgraced at Ascot. I think she’ll appreciate the all-weather surface, and she’s drawn well, which will work in her favour.
Then, I ride Maissara in the 5:15, also for Roger. She’s had two runs under her belt, so her experience should be an advantage, especially in what looks like the stronger division of the two novice races. Once again, we’ve been handed a good draw, so I’m hoping that will make a difference.
At 5:45, I’m on Ash Wednesday for Heather Main. Heather’s horses have been running well lately, which is always encouraging. It’s a competitive race at a lower level, but we’re stepping Ash Wednesday up in trip, and we hope that’ll bring out some improvement.
In the 6:15, I partner Mersea Island for Charlie Johnston in a valuable novice race. He’s by the excellent stallion Sea The Stars and made his debut at Haydock on soft ground. He’s a big horse, and I’m confident he’ll progress through the rest of the year and into the winter. Definitely one to watch for next season.
Next, I ride Al Ameed for Simon & Ed Crisford in the 6:45. He’s been consistent and is rated 84, which should be good enough to be competitive here. Unfortunately, he’s been the bridesmaid a few times, but I’m hoping to change that, though the Gosden horse looks tough to beat.
In the 7:15, I’m aboard St Pancras for Martyn Meade. He didn’t seem to enjoy the heavy ground or the longer trip last time, so we’re back on the all-weather and down in distance. He was impressive at Pontefract earlier this year over a mile and a half, so dropping back in trip should be a positive for him.
Midnight Dream is my ride for Roger Varian in the 7:45. He’s been running well in defeat, and his debut win was very encouraging. I think he’s still learning his craft, but he starts off with a nice handicap mark. It’s a tricky race with a large field, but we’ve been blessed with another good draw, which will help.
Finally, I close the day with Open Secret in the 8:15 for Charlie Johnston. He was a solid winner last time at Redcar over a mile and six, and it looked like he stayed every yard of the trip. The step up to two miles around Kempton should suit him well. It’s another competitive race, but Charlie’s horses are in good form, so I’m hopeful for a strong finish.
That wraps up a busy day of nine rides at Kempton, and I’m hoping to add to what has already been a successful week.
Best of luck to everyone, and I wish you all a great weekend!
Jack Mitchell
The 4th and 5th of October 2024
As the flat season draws to a close, we've got a busy weekend lined up on the all-weather. Originally, we were scheduled to be at Newmarket, but a last-minute change of plans switched us to other tracks. As always, my agent did a fantastic job juggling things.
Friday
Tomorrow, we're off to Newcastle for two rides with Roger Varian. First up is Spetses in the 5:25. He’s a big, beautiful horse who has taken quite a while to reach the track. In a small field, this will be a nice introduction for him, and we’re hoping for a solid performance to build on.
Next, in the 6:00, I’ll be riding Greatgadian, a real stable favourite. He’s been in some good races this year and returns to Newcastle, the scene of his last victory. He’ll need everything to fall into place, as he relies on a fast pace to run at, but if he gets some luck, I think he’ll go close.
Saturday
Looking ahead to Saturday, while the big Group 1 racing takes place at Newmarket, I’ve been switched to Southwell in another last-minute change. My first ride will be Anthropologist for Charlie Johnston in the 4:05. The horse has had a busy year, gaining plenty of experience, but it’s a competitive race. As is often the case with Johnston’s runners, you never know what to expect.
In the 4:40, I’ll be back riding for Roger Varian on Tawajjah, donning the famous Shadwell colours. He’s a lovely big three-year-old by Frankel and was narrowly beaten at Windsor last time. He ran a bit green that day, so hopefully he can take a step forward and go one better here.
Next is Havana Force for Marco Botti in the 5:15. He’s been a bit of a bridesmaid this season, so we’re hoping his luck will turn. He loves the all-weather surface, and Marco’s team has been in great form lately.
In the 5:45, I’ll be on Another Investment for Nigel Tinkler, a horse I’ve won on many times in the past. He hasn’t managed a win this year but is on a fair mark and ran well at Southwell a couple of races ago. Like Greatgadian, he’ll need a fast pace to close from the back, but he’s an interesting contender.
At 6:15, I’ll be riding Ensured for Dr. Newland and Jamie Insole. He’s had a great run of wins this year, though the handicapper has caught up with him, so he’s on his highest mark ever. It’s my first ride for the yard, which has been having a fantastic season on the flat, and I’m eager to put in a good performance.
Then it’s Roman Emperor for John Ryan in the 6:45. He did really well as a three-year-old on the all-weather last winter but has struggled a bit since. I’m a strong believer he’ll bounce back soon, especially with how well John’s two-year-olds have been running lately. Hopefully, that form rubs off.
We wrap up a busy day with Blue Dandy for James Tate in the 7:15. He’s a two-year-old making his debut, but unfortunately, we haven’t been handed the best draw, especially over six furlongs. That said, you can always rely on James’s horses to be well-prepared, and he’s had a great season so far.
That rounds off the weekend for me. Let’s hope we can keep the winners coming and finish the season strong!
Best of luck,
Jack Mitchell
The 27th and 28th of September 2024
After a rough start to the week, my luck hasn’t improved with the rain causing chaos and leading to multiple non-runners.
Friday
We kick off on Friday with my sole ride of the day, Blazes Boylan in the 6:30 for Robert Cowell. He’s a horse I’ve won on a couple of times, making him a real favorite of mine. He loves the all-weather track and the minimum trip, so I’m expecting a strong performance from him.
Saturday
Moving on to a busier Saturday at Haydock, I ride the hot prospect, Skipper, who runs in the 1:30 for Tom Clover. He performed well last time out, justifying his favoritism. He’s a lovely big horse, but the ground is somewhat uncertain, which adds a bit of intrigue. However, he’s in great form for a competitive race.
Next, we have Harry’s Halo in the 2:40 for Kevin Frost. After a solid win at Nottingham last time, he’s been running well all year and absolutely thrives in muddy conditions, which should play to his advantage given the forecast.
We’ll finish the day with Blue Storm in the 3:15 for Gemma Tutty. This will be my first ride on him, and he’s had an impressive year. He won the three-year-old dash on Epsom Derby Day, showcasing his exceptional speed. I’m hopeful he can light up the Haydock track.
That wraps up my weekend. Here’s to getting back in winning form after a few days off sick!
Best of luck,
Jack Mitchell
The 20th and 21st of September 2024
After a fantastic week on the track with winners across England, I’m looking forward to keeping the momentum going as we head into another busy weekend of racing.
Friday
We start off at Kempton, where my first ride is Prince of India in the 4:00 for Marco Botti. It's his debut in what looks like a very competitive maiden. He’s well-bred and cost a fair bit, so we’re hoping he can make an impression first time out.
My second ride of the day is Jersey Maverick for Charlie Fellowes in the 4:35. I rode him at Salisbury, and he’s definitely a work in progress. He’s still a big baby, learning as he goes, so it’ll be interesting to see how he develops tomorrow.
Saturday
On Saturday, we move to Newmarket. My first ride is Luna Girl for Richard Hannon in the 1:35. She ran really well on her debut at Epsom, finishing behind an emphatic winner. That was over seven furlongs on different ground, so stepping up to a mile should help her improve.
In the 2:10, I’ll be on Zenjabeela for Roger Varian. She’s a filly who I think is coming into her own now. She’s put in some strong runs in good company, and I feel the stiff finish at the Rowley Mile will suit her nicely.
Next up is Dashing Dick for William Stone in the 3:20. He’s a real character, a winner at the other Newmarket track earlier in the summer, and followed that up with a good effort in defeat. He likes to be up with the pace, and the stiff finish here should work in his favor.
In the Cesarewitch Trial at 3:55, I ride Story House for William Knight. This is a key prep race for the main event in a few weeks, which is a race I’d love to win. He’s in good form and carrying a nice, light weight, which should help over the longer trip. The step up in distance should suit him, and he was a good winner at Haydock earlier this year.
Finally, I’ll be on Ciara Pearl in the 4:30 for Daniel & Claire Kubler. I’ve ridden her a few times, and she was unlucky not to win at Salisbury a couple of runs back. She’s been kept busy this summer, so fitness won’t be an issue. I think the ground and the stiff finish will suit her, but it’s a competitive field, so she’ll need to be at her best.
That wraps up the weekend for me. Hopefully, we can keep the good form going and pick up some more winners!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 12th, 13th and 14th of September 2024
Looking forward to another exciting weekend of racing, with plenty of travel and some fantastic rides ahead!
Friday
We kick things off down South at Salisbury with two rides. My first is in the 3:15 aboard Opening Bat for Harry Charlton. While I don’t usually ride for this yard, they’ve been in great form recently. Opening Bat is a two-year-old, so we could be in for a real showstopper or a green run—we’ll just have to wait and see.
Next, I’ll be riding Jowddah in the 4:28 for Roger Varian, in the Al Maktoum colours. She made a very encouraging debut last time out in a competitive novice, and with that experience under her belt, we’re hopeful she can go one better tomorrow.
Saturday
On Saturday, it’s just the one ride for me, as I head up to the Doncaster St. Leger Festival. I’ll be riding Daysofourlives in the 4:15 for Marco Botti. He’s been running very well at a high level, and he’s got a great draw over a mile and a quarter, with ground conditions that should suit him. It’s an ultra-competitive race, as you’d expect at the Leger meeting, but if he brings his Ascot form, he’ll be a real contender.
Sunday
Then on Sunday, I’m off to Sweden to ride at Bridge Park, where I’ve got some exciting rides lined up. The one to watch will be Mendel’s Rock in the Group 3 Stockholm Cup (Race 8). The trainer is confident he has a great chance, and as it’s my first time there, I’m really looking forward to the experience—hopefully we can bring home some winners!
That wraps up my weekend. Best of luck to everyone!
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell.
The 6th and 7th of September 2024
Looking forward to another exciting weekend of racing!
Friday
We kick things off at Ascot with Tornado Alert in the 2:25, a promising Godolphin-owned colt trained by Saeed Bin Suroor. This will be my first ride for Saeed, which I’m really excited about. Tornado Alert is sired by Too Darn Hot, and the yard is always excellent at preparing them for their debut, so I’m hopeful we can deliver a strong ride and get a good result.
Next, I’m on Kosometsuke in the 3:35 for Roger Varian. He’s also having his first run, so it's very much a learning day for him. The plan is to secure a good position and help him finish his race well. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on for the future.
We round off Ascot with Inspiritus in the 4:45, also for Roger. Although he hasn’t quite hit the frame since winning at Lingfield, the ground could have been a factor. As a 2-year-old, he ran a solid second on soft ground at Windsor, so the rain at Ascot shouldn’t trouble him. It’s a competitive race, but if he handles the conditions, we could be in with a shout.
Saturday
On Saturday, we head to Kempton. I start the day in the 3:15 on Greatgadian for Roger Varian. He’s a true legend of a horse, though he can be a bit quirky and likes things done his way. We’ve got a tough draw out wide, but if he can rediscover his best form, he’s more than capable of running a big race.
In the 4:20, I’ll be riding Azure Angel for Roger again. I’ve won on her a couple of times, and while she’s not drawn ideally, she’s always game. She loves the all-weather surface, so we’ll be aiming to get into a good position and finish strongly.
Finally, I’m on Abraaj in the 5:30 for Simon Pearce. This is a horse we know very well. He’s got a great draw, the trip suits him, and he’s a proven course-and-distance winner. Simon’s yard is in excellent form, and Abraaj loves the all-weather, so this one really ticks all the boxes. I’m expecting a solid run from him.
Looking forward to the weekend and hoping for some strong results across both meetings. Let’s see how the horses perform and give them the best rides we can!
The 30th and 31st of August 2024
After securing a few wins this week, I'm looking forward to another action-packed weekend, starting with a full day at Salisbury before heading down to Lingfield.
Friday
My Friday begins in the 4:55 with Bintmaha for William Knight. She’s making her handicap debut after three solid runs, and although she hasn't disgraced herself, she starts her handicap career with a low mark. This should give her a great chance to secure her first win.
My second ride is Jersey Maverick for Charlie Fellowes in the 5:30. It’s his second outing after running very green last time, so hopefully, he can learn from that experience and show some improvement.
Next up is Fox Avatar for Roger Varian in the 6:40. This will be his first time out, but Salisbury is a nice place to start, especially with a smaller field. Hopefully, he can learn a lot and maybe kick off his career with a win.
I’ll finish Friday with Blenheim Star for William Knight in the 7:13. This horse has put together a strong sequence of wins this year and seems to be in good form. His last run at Brighton didn’t go well, but that track clearly didn’t suit him. Back on a flatter surface, we should see what he's truly capable of.
Saturday
On Saturday at Lingfield, my first ride is Blue Anthem for George Boughey in the 4:50. He’s a two-year-old with a couple of runs under his belt. He seems like a slow learner, but that could mean he’ll improve with more racing, though I’m not entirely sure what to expect.
Then, I have Fearless Bay in the 5:55 for Ed Dunlop. He stays very well and was a good winner at Kempton last time, so he obviously handles the all-weather surface. It’s another small field, so hopefully, he can dictate the race to his liking, and I’m excited to see how he performs.
Next is Fai Fai for Daniel Steele in the 6:55. He has course form, having been a good winner over six furlongs here, and seven doesn’t seem to be an issue as he’s won on turf. The only concern is the bad draw, but we’ll aim to overcome that, and if he does, he’ll be in the mix.
Lastly, I ride Katie G for Ed Dunlop in the 7:25. She was a good winner last time at Southwell, clearly thriving on this surface. She’s a horse in form, and the yard is going well, so I’m optimistic about her chances.
Overall, it’s shaping up to be a busy and hopefully successful weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing how each horse performs, and with any luck, we’ll be able to add a few more wins to the tally.
I wish everyone the best of luck over the weekend.
Jack Mitchell.
The 16th and 17th of August 2024
Friday
Hello everyone,
It’s shaping up to be a busy weekend ahead. We kick things off at Goodwood, where my first ride is Sea Emily Run in the 5:50 for Tom Clover. She’s a nice two-year-old who’s had a couple of runs. She performed very well on her debut at this track, though she struggled a bit in a hot maiden last time out. However, she’s had some time off, and I’m hopeful she’s freshened up and ready to run a big race.
I finish up at Goodwood with Dubai Crystal in the 6:50 for George Boughey. I don’t know much about her, but she did win on soft ground at Redcar last year. She’s lost her way a bit this summer, but I have full faith in George’s ability to bring out her best, and hopefully, she can rediscover some of that old form.
Saturday
On Saturday, I head to York for just one ride, but the journey will be worth it as my old favorite, Enfjaar, and I will be running in the Group 3 Strensall Stakes. We won the John Smith’s Cup at York very decisively, and though he’s stepping up in class, the John Smith’s is a tough race to win. Hopefully, he can show a bit more class here. The race will likely be determined by the pace, as he’s dropping back in distance.
Sunday
On Sunday, it’s back to Goodwood, where I start the day riding Eavestone in the 1:50 for Roger Varian. She was very unlucky not to win last time out, and I’m hoping for some rain, as I think she’ll appreciate a bit of give underfoot.
Next up is Twirling in the 2:25 for Simon & Ed Crisford. We all know and love her. She’s been competing in some very high-class races since I won on her at Doncaster. This race is a bit more realistic for her. She’s carrying a lot of weight, but she’s a big girl, and I’m hopeful she’ll handle it well.
Then we have Telemark in the 3:35, again for Simon & Ed. He was a good winner in the Sunday Series, and I’d prefer some rain for him as well. He’s stepping up in class, but he’s got a nice weight on him, and the yard is in top form.
We round off the weekend with Make A Scene for Jonathan Portman in the 4:10. She’s a very temperamental mare who doesn’t like being told what to do. You can’t use the persuader on her; you have to let her think she’s in control. She could turn up, or she might not—it all depends on which side of the bed Make A Scene gets up on that morning.
Best of luck to everyone over the weekend. Fingers crossed we can get a couple over the line.
All the best,
Jack Mitchell

After a very warm week on the track, we head back to my home turf at Epsom with a total of five rides on Friday.
We kick off the weekend with Dr T H G for Ed Dunlop in the 1:40. He's had three runs, with a good third place on his second outing. Now entering handicap company for the first time, hopefully he can handle the roller-coaster that is Epsom, especially as he's on quite a low mark.
Next is Creative Lady for Amy Murphy in the 2:15. She ran very well first time out, finishing second to a horse who has since won again. In a field of this class, I hope she can put her experience to good use.
My third ride is Nasim for Mark Pattinson in the 3:25. He's been performing well on the all-weather but has lost his way a little bit. However, he has slipped down the handicap to the lowest mark he has ever run off. Hopefully, he can find a bit of confidence in a lower-grade race and rediscover his old spark.
Then we have Faayzah for Simon and Ed Crisford in the 4:00. The team is going great guns at the minute, so hopefully that transfers to her. She ran very well last time, albeit finishing last, just getting tired after a long layoff. I think that run will blow the cobwebs away, and she will give a good account of herself.
We end Epsom with King David for Marco Botti in the 4:35. He's running in a handicap for the first time, making him one of the least experienced horses in the field. He's coming down a furlong from his last race, which I believe will suit him. We just have to hope he can handle the undulations of the track.
Saturday
On Saturday, we are at Doncaster for a couple of rides. We start with Thapa VC for Mark Rimell in the 3:07. He's a horse I know very well and has been running excellently of late, with a win and a second in his last two races. He just needs a good gallop on and can chase them down, as he loves running past horses.
We round up with Siam Fox for Kevin Frost in the 3:42. A winner this year already, and conditions seem to be perfect for him on Saturday. However, he will also need a nice gallop to be in with a chance.
Those are my rides. Fingers crossed for a couple of nice winners. I wish everyone good luck this weekend, and thank God the Premier League is back!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell.
The 9th and 10th of August 2024
With a quieter weekend of racing ahead, I'm looking forward to some exciting rides at Newmarket on Friday night and Haydock on Saturday afternoon.
Friday:
We kick things off with my only ride at Newmarket on Friday night, Dashing Dick for William Stone in the 7:10. William's yard is in great form at the moment. The horse is a recent course winner, so he obviously likes the track, and the horse that finished second in that race has gone on to win, so the form has been backed up. We're just hoping he hasn't gone too high up in the weights, but he arrives there with a great chance.
Saturday:
Moving on to a busier Saturday, we're at Haydock, with my first ride being Twirling for Simon & Ed Crisford in the 2:25. She's a filly I know very well, having won on her a couple of times over the last two years. She's in good form, but it's a very competitive race and she hasn’t been blessed with the kindest draw out in 12. If she can overcome that and get herself into a nice position, we could see a good performance.
Next up is Remoji in the 4:10 for Roger Varian. She's a very lightly raced filly, a good winner at Beverley, and wasn't disgraced next time out in a novice with a penalty. It's her first time in a handicap, so she'll need to grow up a little bit, but I hope she'll improve with the step up in distance.
Lastly, there's Quick Away for Kevin Frost in the 5:20. He's a horse Kevin bought from Charlie Johnston’s. He had a very solid run at Southwell on the all-weather, but apart from that, I don’t know much about him. Kevin knows the time of day, though, so I’m hoping to finish with a bang.
That wraps up my rides. I wish all of you the best of luck this weekend, and I'm hoping for a couple of winners myself!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 2nd and 3rd of August 2024
Another exciting weekend of racing, this time at the Newmarket July course and the Glorious Goodwood
Friday:
First up is Elyam for Richard Hannon in the 6:53 at Newmarket. He's a nice 2 year old that ran very well on debut at Newbury so hopefully he’s learnt a lot from that experience and can go one better.
Next in the 7:28 is Get Jiggy With It for Charlie Hills, in a novice, but she has a handicap mark. She’s been unlucky on a few of her runs so I’m hoping Lady Luck is on her side tomorrow night, as she like the ground and likes the trip from what I’ve seen.
Next is Kalumunda in the 7:58 for Joe Parr, he's had a long time off but hopefully he’s not too rusty as he finished the year on a really good note and the trip is ideal for him.
Last but not least is Orchard keeper for Roger Varian in the 8:28. She was a winner at the same track a few weeks ago over a mile and a quarter. She’s stepping up 2 furlongs now, so hopefully she’ll improve with the extra distance.
Saturday:
I'm over to Goodwood on Saturday and my first ride is in the 3:35 Stewards Cup for John Ryan, a horse called The X O, who has been frustrating ride but a good horse at the same time. He’s put a couple of good runs in recently so hopefully he’s back on track. John said he is fit and well , but you’ll need a lot of luck in a race like that.
My final ride is Mission to Moon in the 4:10 for Roger Varian. He is a very likeable cult and is a course winner earlier in the year, albeit on softer ground, but he put in a massive performance at Royal Ascot in the Britannia finishing a really good race so hopefully that form can translate to a good run here. Again it's Goodwood so we will need a bit of luck on our side but I’m hoping he do the business.
That's my weekend rounded up. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope you all enjoy the sunshine.
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell.
The 26th and 27th of July 2024
Looking forward to another great few days of racing! After a relatively quiet beginning to the week, things are sure to heat up over the next two days with ten rides in total at Sandown and Lingfield.
We start on Friday at Sandown in the 6:30, riding a horse called Kokabah for Roger Varian. She’s a filly who has had one run but hasn't raced for a while. Hopefully, she has learned plenty from that experience, and a positive draw is always handy.
Next on the card is Jarmaillo in the 7:05 for Warren Greatrex. Although he is primarily a jumps trainer, he has done very well with his flat horses recently. It’s quite a big field for a mile and six furlongs around Sandown, and I know this horse well, having won on him when he was with Roger Varian. It looks like an ultra-competitive race, and we’ll be hoping for a bit of luck.
I then ride Lone Piper in the 7:35 for Tom Clover. He’s a lightly raced horse who was extremely unlucky not to get up at Yarmouth last time. He came with a wet sail down the outside and just couldn't quite win. The stiffer finish at Sandown will definitely help him.
Next up is Indemnity in the 8:10 for Roger Varian again. He’s got a nice draw, and I think the track will suit him. Hopefully, we can get the best out of him.
On Saturday evening, we head to Lingfield. My first ride is for Jonathan Portman in the 5:15, on a horse called Make A Scene. He’s a winner on the all-weather, and although things haven’t quite gone his way this year, this looks like a nice enough race to boost his confidence. Hopefully, the ups and downs of the turf track will suit him.
Up next is Blenheim Lad in the 5:45 for Camilla Poulton. The trip will suit him; he was a good second and showed a great bit of form at Wolverhampton earlier in the year. Hopefully, he can rejuvenate that form.
In the 6:15, I ride a 2-year-old for Marco Botti called El Fox. I actually rode her on her debut in Yarmouth in a very competitive race. She was very green but did everything the right way, so hopefully, she can make use of that good experience.
In the 6:45, we have Marsh Benham for George Baker, a horse I know very well. I wouldn’t mind a bit of rain for him, as he goes better in the mud, but he has a great draw up against the near-side rail. It looks like another competitive and full field race.
We then have Rawassi for Simon and Ed Crisford in the 7:15. She’s a filly I've ridden a couple of times, and she has been very unlucky to bump into some very nice individuals. Her last couple of runs here, where she finished third, have been nice solid performances. The yard is in good form, so we hope she can put her best foot forward.
Finally, we have Smooth Silesie in the 7:45 for Lisa Williamson. I don’t know much about the horse, but after reading her form, I see she has a good win over five furlongs at Nottingham. Hopefully, the fast five at Lingfield will suit her.
Fingers crossed we can get at least a few winners out of them, as we want to keep this good form going. That's all from me, and I wish you the best of luck over the weekend.
Be lucky,
Jack Mitchell
The 19th and 20th of July 2024
After a great win in the John Smith's Cup handicap last week on a fantastic horse called Enfjaar, I'm looking forward to another action-packed weekend, starting with a few rides at the Newmarket July course.
We begin the weekend with a ride for Roger Varian in the 5:50 race on a horse called English Harbour. He is a lovely horse but is still a maiden with a couple of runs for experience. I'm hoping he can run a big race in what is sure to be a competitive Newmarket novice race.
My second ride of the night is for William Knight in the 7:35 race on a horse called Regal Envoy. This is a horse I have won on in the past, though not for a while. He put two good wins together over six furlongs, so it will be interesting to see him drop back down to five furlongs. As you know, it's a stiff finish at the July course, and hopefully, his stamina can come into play.
My last ride at Newmarket is for Peter Chapple-Hyam in the 8:10 race. He was a novice winner on the all-weather track, but things didn't go to plan for him last time. The trip looks right; let's just hope it doesn't dry up too much for him.
Then we head to Ripon for two rides. The first one is for Roger Varian called Shadow Dance in the 3:55 race. He showed a lot of promise last year but has been waiting for softer ground, and Ripon is perfect at the moment. It's an ultra-competitive handicap, especially in the high ratings, but he has a good draw, and I hope he has turned a corner.
We finish off with Pumalin Park for Sir Michael Stoute in the 4:30 race. He was a good winner at Salisbury, overcame some traffic problems late on, and was a great second at Kempton last time out. Remember, you can never write off a Sir Michael Stoute runner up north.
That rounds up my weekly blog. I hope you enjoyed it, and let's hope for some more winners!
Best of luck,
Jack Mitchell
The 5th and 6th of July 2024
Friday
Hello everyone, looking forward to another great weekend of racing.
We begin this weekend on Friday with a night meeting at Haydock. My first ride is in the 7:53 on a horse called Tanwwny for Heather Main. He was a good horse a couple of years ago but has dropped in the weights. However, he has won on all types of ground, so that shouldn't be a problem. Let's hope the drop in class can revive him a bit.
Next is Apotheosis in the 8:25 for Simon & Ed Walker. He ran very well first time out from a bad draw at Kempton, running on late. I'm hoping that experience will be put to good use. He is a nice horse who should improve for that run.
My final ride on Friday is Unsung Hero for Heather Main again in the 9:00. He is a horse that I have won on before and loves to be up with the pace, so Haydock should play to his strengths.
Saturday
On Saturday, we are riding at Nottingham. I start the evening with Faustus in the 6:40 for Robert Cowell. I won on him last time at the same track and distance. He is a really likeable horse who loves to be at the front. I'm hoping they haven't had too much rain as he likes it quick underfoot.
Next is Dark Dreamer in the 7:10 for Robert Cowell, who was also a winner on the same day, completing my double for Cowell Racing. He is a horse on the upgrade, still a big baby but going the right way. I'm not sure if we will get an easy lead this time, but as long as he can get into a nice rhythm, I'm sure he will be right there.
Next up is an Irish raider called Currumbin for John S. O'Donoghue in the 7:48. He has good form over the pond on the soft mile. Not sure how he will take to English racing, but he is drawn well, and it’s not an ultra-competitive race.
Then on to Surrey Force in the 8:10 for Kevin Philippart De Foy. He is a lightly raced animal who has been gelded since his last run, so we are hoping that will bring out some improvement. He is drawn well and seems to stay the trip.
Last but not least is Russian Rumour in the 8:48 for Jonathan Portman. He is a course and distance winner who stays very well and likes to chase down horses. Hopefully, there is a gallop on, and we can pick up the pieces in the long straight at Nottingham.
That wraps up my weekend of racing. I'm very much looking forward to the Sandown Eclipse where I think City of Troy will win, but keep an eye out for Dancing Gemini, who I think will run a big race down in trip.
Let’s also keep our fingers crossed that England can get into the semi-finals of the Euros!
That's all from me.
Jack
The 28th and 29th of June 2024
Friday
After returning from Germany as probably the only Brit not there for the Euros, I'm looking forward to four exciting rides at Newmarket this Friday.
First up in the 5:15 is the 2-year-old Miss Fascinator for Roger Varian. It's her first time out, and as we know, Newmarket is very warm and challenging at the moment, but she'll take her chances and she is ready for the races.
Next is Orchard Keeper for Roger Varian in the 5:50. She had a couple of goes on the all-weather, and hopefully, stepping up to a mile and a quarter, we'll see some improvements.
My third ride is in the 7:35, Bulldog Drummond for Patrick Owens. He ran really well there last week at the July course in a very good race, so hopefully, he can bring that form forward, as he's one who will like the quick ground.
After that, I'm on Savanna King in the 8:45 for Joseph Parr. He has been running well over a mile and a mile and a quarter, so he's hard to gauge, but it's a very small field so it could get tactical, and that mile pace he has could play to his strengths.
Saturday
My first ride is It Ain't Two for Hugo Palmer in the 2:15 listed fillies' stakes. She's in good form, has only run three times, and won two of them, one of which was at Carlisle, which is a competitive track, so if she can put her best foot forward, she should give a good show.
Next up is the 2:50, for Roger Varian on a horse called Aimeric that I've won a couple on in the last few seasons. He's a very likable horse, and he loves quick ground. It's a very small competitive race, and he's coming up against King of Conquest, who he was second to at Goodwood, so hopefully, he can reverse the form.
Last up is Bint Al Daar in the 5:10. He's been a bit out of form on his two starts this year, but he is a winner on the all-weather over this trip, and I think the quick ground should suit him.
That's it for my two days at Newmarket. I hope everyone enjoys the sunshine, and as always, be lucky!
All the best,
Jack Mitchell
The 21st and 22nd of June 2024
Looking forward to another great weekend of racing with lots of exciting rides. After scoring two doubles over the last two days, I am looking to carry that form into the weekend.
Starting with Friday, we head to the July course at Newmarket. My first ride in the first race is Biniorella Bay for Tom Clover. She ran really well on debut, and I am hoping she has taken a nice step forward from that experience. She got bumped a lot that day, so fingers crossed that has toughened her up a bit, and we go there with a great chance.
Moving on to my second and last ride of Friday, I ride for Kevin Frost in the 6:35 on a horse named Stratocracy. He is a horse from Richard Hannon's stable but has been very disappointing, to be honest. He has taken a bit of a tumble in the weights. Albeit he is an outsider, if things can fall into his lap, he will be able to run a nice race for me.
I then return on Saturday to the Newmarket July course once more, starting my day with a 2-year-old first time out for Richard Hannon in the 2:10 called Invited. Richard knows how to get one ready for a first appearance, but obviously, a first time on the track can be daunting. Riding for a good trainer with 2-year-olds is always a massive help as his 2-year-olds are absolutely flying this year, recently picking up a win at Royal Ascot this week. Definitely one I will be looking forward to.
My second ride on the card is Skipper in the 3:20 for Tom Clover. He is a lovely horse and ran very well on debut at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile course. He just found the lumps and bumps a bit too much but got his act together and finished very strongly, so I'm hoping he has improved from that experience.
Ride number three on the card is in the 4:00 called Goal Exceeded for John O'Donoghue, who is over from Ireland. I worked very closely with John when he was an assistant trainer down at Roger Varian's yard a few years ago. He's made a very good start to his training career over in Ireland, and he brings this horse over in very good form on the back of a great run over five furlongs. I think six furlongs with a little bit of a stiff finish will suit.
Ending with my last ride of the day in the 4:35 is a horse called Roman Emperor for John Ryan, who's had a successful but busy time on the all-weather but has had a little bit of a break and freshened up. John always seems to do well with these kinds of horses at Newmarket, and he has dropped in the weights.
That wraps up my two days in Newmarket, with some good chances and looking to continue the nice form we are in at the minute. I hope you all have a great weekend and be lucky!
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell
The 14th and 15th of June 2024
Hey Guys,
Busy weekend to look forward to! Obviously, Royal Ascot is around the corner, so we are hoping to pinch a few rides there.
Tomorrow, we start at Goodwood, riding for Tom Clover in the 5:30 on a horse called Sea Emily Run. I have had a couple of sits on her at home, and she seems to be going the right way. However, with first-time-out horses, you never know. It looks like a competitive little race, but I hope she can put in a great performance for me.
My second ride is Cloud King for Robert Cowell, the sprint king. He is a winner, having won at Southwell a couple of starts ago. He wasn't at his best last time at Goodwood, over the same card and distance. I think he ran a bit too free and used up too much energy, so hopefully, I can harness that and give him a good ride.
On Saturday, I am heading to York. I have three rides up there. The first one is Divine Jewel in the 3:00 for Roger Varian. She is a very likeable filly and is up to this kind of class. These races are very competitive this time of year, and she stays well, so I'm hoping York will suit her since she has run well there before.
My second ride is Mostawaa for Heather Main in the 4:45. He was an excellent horse in his day. He spent a winter out in Dubai with no luck, but he hasn’t been performing as well as of late. However, he is creeping down the handicap, which will hopefully give him a chance to find some sort of revival.
My last ride is Another Investment for Nigel Tinkler in the 5:20. He is a horse I’ve won on a couple of times. He is not the easiest to win with, but he has won twice at York with me on. Any rain will be welcome for him, as he loves to get his toes in.
That rounds up my next couple of days racing. I hope you all have a great weekend, and let’s hope England can bring it home in the Euros!
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell.
The 8th and 9th of June 2024
Hello everyone,
This weekend is shaping up to be a bit quieter than usual, but I'm still excited about the three rides I have lined up.
Saturday at Haydock:
We kick off with Al Barez for Tom Clover in the 4:45. He has been impressive, winning his last two runs on the all-weather. He's a horse who actually prefers a quicker surface underneath, so I'm hoping for dry conditions. It's a big field and a competitive race, but he's in good form and has previously won on turf. I'm really looking forward to riding him.
Sunday at Haydock:
First up, I'll be riding Three Priests for Roger Varian in the 5:05, a listed race. She has shown very good form in listed races but hasn't secured a win yet. It's an ultra-competitive field, especially for a filly up against the boys, but she gets a helpful weight allowance. I'm optimistic about her chances.
Next, in the 5:40, I'll be on Mister Bluebird for Heather Main. I haven't ridden him before, and he's been somewhat inconsistent in form. Nonetheless, I'm hopeful and eager to see how he performs.
Keeping things short and sweet this weekend. Fingers crossed for some winners. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope you have a fantastic weekend.
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell
The 31st of May, 1st and 2nd of June 2024
Hey guys,
Looking forward to another exciting weekend of racing where I have a total of 12 rides. Hopefully, they all run. Today I will be going through my top 5 rides that I am looking forward to.
My first ride will be Friday night at Doncaster in the 6:45, on a filly called Twirling. She is a horse I know very well. She ran a huge race on her turf debut at Nottingham not long ago, so it will be interesting to see how she has come on after that run.
Also on the same card, in the 8:50, I will be riding a horse for Charlie Johnston called Knightswood. He showed a lot of progression last year and ran well first time up on soft ground. He didn't have the best run last time out, but this was mainly due to the fast ground. The rainy weather over the next few days should leave Doncaster on the soft side, which will help him out, so I am looking forward to seeing him get back on the comeback trail.
We then head to Epsom Derby Day, where I ride a favourite of mine, Chipstead, in the 3:45 for Rodger Teal in the 5-furlong dash. He is drawn quite well and will appreciate the slower ground that we have at the minute. Obviously, in a race like that, you need a lot of luck, but he goes there in great form and hopefully has a good chance.
In the last race at 5:50, I ride for Tom Clover on a horse I know very well called Al Barez. He has won his last two starts, although on the all-weather, but he has won on turf before. Hopefully, he can handle the undulations and helter-skelter of Tattenham Corner and show a good turn of foot, but we do need the ground to dry out for him.
We then move on to a busy day on Sunday at Nottingham. The horse I am most looking forward to is a 2-year-old in the 1:40 called Rajeteriat. He was unlucky last time, which we will put down to lack of experience. With another run under his belt, he should be a bit sharper, and I'd like to see him go close on Sunday.
That wraps up my five favourite rides for the weekend. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope you enjoy this weekend of racing.
All the best,
Jack Mitchell.
The 25th of May 2024
Hey guys, Jack Mitchell here with another very busy day at Windsor.
Looking forward to some exciting rides, so let's get into them!
We kick things off in the 5:35 with a horse called Vince Lombardi for Daniel and Claire Kubler. He is a winner over 6 furlongs up in Scotland at Hamilton. He won quite impressively that day, but the handicapper has penalized him for it. He is still a bit above that mark, drawn well, and the ground will suit.
My next ride is for Tom Clover, a horse called Breakout Star in the 6:05. It's a two-year-old, first time out, and again, like I've said before, the first day out of school can either surprise you or disappoint you. He has been going well at home, so hopefully, he puts it all together on the track.
My next ride is Accural in the 6:40 for Daniel and Claire Kubler again. Again, it's the first time out. I haven't seen the horse, but he is closely related to a horse I have won on before, so the chemistry may be there. Hopefully, the success runs in the family.
The fourth race of the day is for Robert Cowell, a horse called Democracy Dilemma from Ireland in the 7:15. He was a good winner at the Chester May meeting, in a valuable handicap up there. Again, it's a nice pot here. He is drawn a little bit out, but I wouldn't worry too much as there is a lot of pace in the race. So hopefully, he can repeat Chester.
I then have a ride for Roger Varian in the 7:45 on a horse called Island Star. He hasn't run for a very long time, nearly a year, so has a few cobwebs to blow away, but he seems in good order, so he should go there with a chance.
Next on the card is Thrilling Dream for Ed Dunlop in the 8:15. A recent winner in a mile and a quarter at Bath, he looked like he was still learning on the job, so a step up another furlong should definitely help him.
My last ride of a busy night is a horse called Sugarloaf Lenny for William Knight in the 8:45. He is a horse I have won on before at Lingfield on the all-weather. He will be on turf this time and looks to be off a nice mark. He ran not too long ago at Newmarket in a very competitive race and probably just needed the run with a bit of freshness in him. So hopefully, the dust has been blown away, and he will give a good showing.
Wish you all the best for this weekend's racing.
Jack Mitchell
The 16th and 17th of May 2024
We start today with a ride for Ed Dunlop in the 5:52 race called Ronnie Raven. It's a tricky little race as there are a lot of unexposed horses in this handicap. Some also have first-time headgear, as my horse does, and he's also up two furlongs, so hopefully, this brings out further improvement.
My second ride is for Simon Pearce, who is going great guns at the moment, on a horse called Abraaj in the 6:22. I have won on him before up at Newcastle. He is an out-and-out galloper. Two miles definitely suit him, and he is also a winner on the all-weather, so he goes there with a great chance.
The third ride on the card is for Paul & Oliver Cole, called Afentiko, in the 6:52. It's a 2-year-old, first time out, so it's his first day out of school. They have given me good vibes from his homework. Obviously, anything can happen, but he goes there with high expectations.
We then move on to my fourth ride on the card, which is for Robert Cowell, called La Verite in the 7:22. I have actually ridden the horse before for a different trainer over a longer trip. Robert is the sprint king, so hopefully, he has seen something that the other trainer hadn't, and five furlongs will play to his strength.
My last ride at Lingfield is Faustus in the 7:52 for Robert Cowell. He is a very likable horse, didn't get the rub of the green at Brighton last time, but he is a very fast horse, and the fast five at Lingfield will suit him. We are drawn close to the stand-side rail, which will be a massive help.
Lastly, my only ride at Newmarket on Friday is in the 2:53, on a horse named Skipper. It is a novice race, first time out, for Tom Clover. He has done everything right at home, but obviously, being a novice at Newmarket takes quite a bit of winning. However, if he is up for the task, Tom will have a nice horse on his hands.
That rounds up my rides on Thursday and Friday. I will enjoy a nice weekend off, which doesn’t happen often!
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell
The 10th and 11th of May 2024
Another busy couple of days filled with lots of interesting rides at Nottingham.
Friday:
We kick off Friday with Condor Pasa in the 5:27 for Roger Varian. He has had a couple of runs and has been unlucky to have bumped into some nice horses, but he will definitely be interesting on turf.
My second ride of the day will be Shaheen Saqaar in the 5:59 for trainer Ed Dunlop. I was actually the last person to win on him, so it will be nice to get back on board. Again, he has not had many goes on turf, so it will be fascinating to see if he can handle it.
My last ride is for John & Thady Gosden in the 6:34. It's a beautifully bred Galileo colt running in a novices' race, so I do not have anything to go on, but it is always nice to pick up this sort of ride on a card like this.
Saturday:
We start Saturday back at Nottingham with Fine Gold in the first race at 2:20, trained by Tom Clover. It's first time out, so I don't know what to expect, but he has been training well. Hoping he will improve for his first day out on track.
We then move on to Celsius in the 3:30, again for Tom Clover. He's a lovely old horse, and I have won a few on him now. He's owned by some very nice people, and he wins races every year. Tom says he's in fighting form, so we will give it a good go.
Next, we have Twirling in the 4:05 for Simon & Ed Crisford. A filly I know very well, she is again unexposed on turf, so we are interested to see how she handles the lumps and bumps of Nottingham. But she is in good form, and although she is top weight, she will definitely give a good account of herself.
We finish with Oak Allye in the 5:15 for Patrick Owens. He does very well with his smaller team in Newmarket. It's a horse that has come straight from Ireland, so a bit unknown from its rise over here, but you can guarantee Patrick has got her in good health to make a good showing.
That's my two days at Nottingham rounded up. I wish everyone the best of luck over the weekend.
Cheers,
Jack Mitchell.
